HIGHS AND LOWS AT SWEETWOODS
An outcrop of questionable clothing parading on the first tee, earning hurtful derision from our fashion connoisseurs.
A fitting venue then, and a fitting day, to celebrate Captain’s Day with our esteemed leader the Rt.Hon.Barry Quantrill C.A.B, who managed the day brilliantly, and whose sponsorship markedly improved the standard of the prizes. To mark the event, BQ challenged us all to match his opening drive as closely as possible. However he then proceeded to put the ball tamely down the middle of the fairway at about 220 yards. Come on Barry, in the pond would have been much more interesting!
Seventeen and a half members turned out, as Phil needs new batteries for the bionic legs, and were joined by two celebrity guests Mal Chumbley and Nick Stocker, the current Horsham RFC senior coaches. The latter were invited as a ‘thank you’ for rescuing the First XV last season. However the gratitude didn’t extend to letting them win anything, with Blod valiantly risking his place at the top of the Merit Table to deny Nick the Bumhole award.
Top prizes in Division One went to the usual suspects Steve O’Carroll and Paul Holmes, with John Guest making a late run for 3rd place on count-back. Steve and Paul also won the Div 1 nearest-the-pin and longest drive respectively.
“Bas the Bandit” scooped 1st place in Division Two, with a bit of help from Woody and Barnes-Wallis, with Keith Russell in 2nd place and Ian Howard in 3rd. Keith also picked up a share of the team prize and a Nearest-the-Pin; it must have been something to do with an intimate knowledge of the course (see above!). Completing the achievements, Mark Sillett won the longest drive in Div 2, while Kevin O’Neill and Phil Mobsby won the parts of the team prize that K.Russell couldn’t reach.
The afternoon was rounded off with the usual fining of the racially-challenged and a photo-call with Lord Justice Stokes, fresh from adjournment of his court duties. Amid the jollity however, Paul stopped the show with the announcement of his retirement from the post of Fixtures Secretary. What will we do without him? Anyone out there ready to fill this most important position in the running of the society ?
