GATTON MANOR
The day dawned grey, cold and wet, ideal conditions for cross-country running but not so good for playing golf. The driveway leading to the Gatton Manor Clubhouse was awash with water, which was not a good omen for the state of the course.
However, spirits were lifted on entering into the warmth of the clubhouse and by the hot coffee and bacon baguette which awaited us. Roger, the Match Manager, presented us with the information sheet, which provoked much discussion amongst the mathematicians in the group working out the instructions for the team game. The rest of us nodded wisely.
At 09.30am the rain stopped. At 09.32am when the first group drove off, it started again and continued for the rest of the day. Only twelve members managed to get to the start line and after the 8th we were reduced to nine when three were pulled up at Beechers. (The Politician, Haka Specialist and The Bearded One). The rest of us continued, fortified by hot drinks at the halfway stage (AF also had a hot toasted sandwich). Conditions dictated the style of play, when shots were played clods of mud often went further than the ball. However, it did not stop Bos from winning the £50 birdie hole, which he kept very quiet about until the prize giving when Roger had to be reminded by Bos that he had won. To be fair to Bos, he did ask if anyone would like a drink even though it was said in a very quiet voice.
After an enjoyable meal and the prize giving, thanks were given to Roger for managing the day and to Derrick for acting as Fines Master. It was also agreed that because so few completed the course, handicaps should not be changed. ( I tell a lie Keith but I know how understanding and kind hearted you are).
